Dear Aunty Brenda 😢

As I scrolled through social media last night in stunned silence, the memories came flooding through my tears. The paths that you took were never easy or the obvious choice. As such, you became a constant trailblazer and inspiration to so many as you rose to the highest of levels. Your final post as Zambian High Commissioner to Kenya a sign of your intelligence and sheer determination. A Sunday school teacher, mother, wife, author and singer among many other things, you remained down to earth and approachable with an ever beaming smile. It was always inspiring seeing you on tv representing Zambia police as spokeswoman. Even though I was young, it made me realise that I too could achieve great things. It is such a huge loss to the country and more so to your loved ones. May God provide comfort in this time of mourning.

I’ll finish with the closing statement from your lecture at Strathmore University, Nairobi:

“In life, you don’t need to follow the road that everybody else has taken. Take the road that has not been trodden; full of grass, no path, and be a trailblazer.” (H.E. Brenda Muntemba)

Identity – Lecrae

“I’m not the shoes I wear,

I’m not the clothes I buy,

I’m not the house I live in,

I’m not the car I drive,

I’m not the job I work,

You can’t define my worth,

By nothing on God’s green earth,

My identity is found in Christ..”

Artist: Lecrae

Song: Identity

Where do you find your identity?

Who do you say I am – Poem

How many different ways, could I possibly explain?

And paint the same picture, with words that are plain?

You’ve marvelled at the signs, and you’ve come back to see miracles,

But still don’t understand the simple message at the pinnacle.

First things first, I AM the bread of life,

Feast up on my words, and be forever satisfied,

The thing you’ve been chasing, is just a façade,

It won’t satisfy your thirst, like a mirage.

Do not be afraid, I’m the light of the world,

The darkness will flee, as my light is unfurled,

Showing you the pathway, even through the valley of death,

I’m still there, your every prayer I have heard.

I AM the good shepherd, through good times or strife,

For the sake of my sheep, I would lay down my life,

All because of love, I was battered and bruised,

Inspired by my love, for both Gentiles and Jews.

So come into my presence, for I’m the only door,

And leave behind your baggage, and wonder no more,

Salvation is promised, to all who will enter,

Life to the fullest, with me at the centre.

I AM the only way, the truth and the life,

All other pathways, will lead you to strife,

The world offers hope, that is built in the sand,

But mine to the end, is the rock that will stand,

I AM the resurrection, and I AM the life,

I speak into darkness; and give it  new life,

I raised up Lazarus, and set him free,

To show God’s power, ingrained in me,

I AM the true vine; the gardener’s the Father,

He prunes and perfects, for his glory, and honour,

I AM that I AM, before time began,

Of all you have heard, who do you say I am?

2 Timothy 1 – Short Poem

As I gaze at the weight, of the task at hand,

And wonder how I could be part of the plan,

I’m timid and weak, my words often fail,

Lord, why would you not, just choose someone else?

.

Someone with boldness, someone with faith,

Someone whose words, simply hold more weight,

Someone like Paul, who even in chains,

Still found a way, of proclaim your name,

.

But Father forgive me! Forgetful man,

It’s not for my actions, or things I’ve done,

It’s only by grace, and only your love,

Your purpose revealed, through Jesus the man,

.

Lord help us to stand, in this world full of sin,

As pressures to change, slowly weigh us in,

Clinging onto Christ, and his blood-drenched cross,

Your intimate love, at ultimate cost

.

Dear London – Short Poem

Dear London and Manny, thank you for your spirit,

Through tragedy and trial, with love you pushed through it,

Those shocking, heart-breaking and gut-wrenching nights,

Of so few so cowardly, it begs the question “Why?”

Disastrous, unfathamable, careless-little-minds,

Descended on your streets, steeling from them many lives,

Demonically possessed, with intent to spread fear,

Instead were met with bravery, and love beyond compare,

Arising from the ashes, dusted off in defiance,

“Enough is enough!” Fear shall never define us,

Nor will it divide us, but bring us ever closer,

Lest victory be handed, to those mindless little loners,

In a game of top trumps, love triumphs over all,

Not acting like Pharisees, who’d look but ignore,

And to the many helpers, who acted on instinct,

Stared death in the face, yet helped without flinching,

Known to mind your business, the way you mind the gap,

Instead you flipped the script, with love unwrapped,

We thank you for you bravery, we thank you for your love,

Refreshing and brotherly, beyond and above.

S.O – Give it to God

“No-one knows you when you’re down!”

This song first struck me the second time I listened to it on S.O’s latest album ‘So It Ends.’ I guess I paid more attention to the lyrics and overall picture that it paints.

The calm melodious chorus asks a personal question of our response to life’s trials; What is our default response when things go wrong?

CHORUS

“Where do you run to when the doors close off?

And who do you call on when it all goes wrong?

The devil is telling me to feed my fear;

‘Why don’t you pack your bags and disappear?’

I’d rather give it to God”

Life is such an unpredictable thing. We make plans, visualise our ideal outcomes and start moving towards those goals. But trial after trial, tragedy after tragedy and we’re back down on our knees. “It was never meant to be like this,” we think.

The bible sympathises with us and offers hope through Jesus. In James 1:12, it says this:

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12)

And Jesus himself offers rest through life’s challenges when he says this:

“Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
